Hidden Treasure
This week I read a story in the news about a woman who had a TV stand in her living room that was worth a lot more than the $150 that her father bought it for. The chest turned out to be an ancient Japanese Relic, worth $ 9.5 Million.[1] This was the purchase price paid to the woman by Amsterdam’s national museum. Apparently, museums and experts had been searching for the chest since 1941, and no one knew that this treasure chest was under someone’s television. The woman was just as surprised as everyone else to learn that what she considered an ordinary TV stand was actually extraordinarily valuable. Don’t you wish that TV stand had been yours!
When I read this story, some spiritual lessons came to my mind. You see, for the Christian, there is a sense that what appears ordinary is actually extraordinarily valuable. The moment you receive Christ as your Lord and Savior, God’s “glorious riches”… “which is Christ in you” (Colossians 1:27) are now given to you. The apostle Paul said that “the unsearchable riches of Christ” which “for ages past was hidden” (Ephesians 3:8) has now been made known to the world. Monetary wealth is valued in the world’s eyes, but there is something more important and valuable than all the money in the world. Jesus said, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36). He was speaking of the greater value of spiritual wealth over monetary wealth. The spiritual wealth that Jesus was talking about was the life that he offers.
That is why the apostle Paul could speak of the fact that all believers in Christ “have this treasure in jars of clay” (2 Corinthians 4:7). Sometimes we can forget that we have this treasure because we are all-too-aware of the ordinary jars of clay that we are. And yet, there is a hidden treasure that indwells us.
